7 Tips For Working From Home

1. Routine

Set a schedule, and stick to it…most of the time. Having clear guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps many remote workers maintain a work-life balance. Working remotely sometimes means extending your day or starting early to accommodate someone else’s time zone. When you do, be sure to wrap up earlier than usual or sleep in a bit the next morning.

2. Environment

In an ideal world, remote employees would have not only a dedicated office but also two computers, one for work and one for personal use. But not everyone has a separate office in their home, and keeping two computers isn’t always realistic. Instead, dedicate a desk for work use.

3. Breaks

Know your company’s policy on break times and take them. If you’re self-employed, give yourself adequate time during the day to walk away from the computer screen and phone. A lunch hour and two 15-minute breaks should be standard.

4. Music And Podcasts

There are plenty of great podcasts that you can listen to in between Zoom meetings to keep you inspired and feeling connected. Podcasts are also a great way to learn new skills or just keep up to date with what’s going on in the world.

5. Mindfulness

With all that is going on in the world at the moment, it’s normal for us to feel confused, overwhelmed or anxious. Try to avoid constantly checking for news updates and take a moment to go for a walk if possible, or try meditation.

6. Over-Communicate

Working remotely requires you to over-communicate. Tell everyone who needs to know about your schedule and availability often. When you finish a project or important task, say so. Over Communicating doesn’t necessarily mean you have to write a five-paragraph essay to explain your every move, but it does mean repeating yourself.

7. Shut Down

It’s easy to lose track of time when working from home, set yourself clear boundaries around what time you will start, finish and take breaks. When it hits finish time, turn off your computer and notifications on your devices so you can switch off yourself. If possible, shut the door where your workspace is. This will help you establish boundaries and a further sense of routine, allowing you to switch off when you need to.
